Are you red-y to give your home interior a magentaverse makeover? Because a vibrant red known as Viva Magenta has been selected by the colour experts at Pantone as their Colour of the Year 2023.
From branded coffee mugs to a swanky Artechhouse exhibition that’s now running in Miami Beach until the spring, Pantone is going all-out to promote Viva Magenta as the hot hue for the year ahead.
“PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known,” enthuses Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of Pantone’s Colour Institute. “Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanises our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
Of course, there’s also this obligatory Pantone promo video that helps build up the hype for Pantone’s palette pick for 2023. Plus, here’s a quick reminder for you that Very Peri, Pantone’s colour choice for 2022, was a warm blue with vivid red undertones.

Pantone Viva Magenta – What Design Experts Think
So, will this ‘red without restraint’ colour promoted by Pantone be making any stand-out statements in interior design for 2023 and beyond? Well, for starters, nobody appears to agree if Viva Magenta is actually a purplish red or more of a hot pink! However, it’s already obvious that this mysterious red is set to be a popular choice for many upcoming home makeovers.
“There is no doubt that Viva Magenta is an oomphy, sophisticated shade of red that delivers powerful value to the eye.”
Luke Leitch at British Vogue
“It’s a markedly more energetic shade than previous years.”
Emma Tucker at Creative Review
“A hot pink that is reminiscent of blush has been named as 2023 colour of the year. Viva Magenta is a vibrant pinky colour with hints of purple that belongs to the red colour family.”
Alice Finney at Dezeen
“Pantone hopes their new crimson red Colour of the Year will encourage people to unleash their rebellious spirit in 2023.”
Megan Slack at Homes & Gardens
“You can incorporate it through patterned wallpaper and throw pillows, or use it to enhance your home gym through fitness equipment.”
Kelly Allen at House Beautiful
“Sure to influence the living room trends and colour schemes. The fact it’s a colour that’s hard to put your finger on (is it more pink or purple?) means it’ll set the tone for this year’s trends. Ideal Home assistant editor, Thea Babington-Stitt, says pair with greys for a stylish contemporary scheme.”
Millie Hurst at Ideal Home
“It’s a colour that plays into the mood of interiors that some of our favourite designers right now are embracing. It’s clear that reds like Viva Magenta can make a modern, graphic statement.”
Hugh Metcalf at Livingetc
“Apologies to colour minimalists everywhere, we predict most of you will be hiding in your rooms – these hues are bright.”
Melissa Epifano at Real Homes
“It exists between blue and red, warm and cool.”
Elle Hunt at The Guardian
“The Pantone 2023 Colour of the Year is bold and very ‘90s. Viva Magenta makes Very Peri look almost mild.”
Rachel Kurzius at Washington Post
