Time For A Purple Makeover?

Fans of Prince and Cadbury Milk Tray can now rejoice, as our homes are set to get their own purple makeover next year. It’s all thanks to the colour specialists at Pantone, who have officially selected Ultra Violet as the Colour of the Year 2018.

Ultra Violet is a blue-based purple that the Pantone colour experts say communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.

Purple Home Decor

“In interiors, Ultra Violet can transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression, or conversely its polish can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings,” explains Pantone. “Ultra Violet calls attention to a tufted couch, piece of art or accent wall. As a colour that can take you in so many directions, Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it’s one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness.”

Despite such praise for purple, the initial reaction to Pantone’s Ultra Violet reveal hasn’t necessarily been purple-ly positive by journalists and bloggers in the home interiors sector.

Over at HouseBeautiful, the team are willing to give it a go, suggesting using Ultra Violet on the inside of furniture like kitchen cabinets and wardrobes. Alternatively, those looking to make more of an impact could try experimenting with purple in the bathroom or guest room.

However, award-winning UK interiors blogger Kimberly Duran believes the Colour of the Year for 2018 should be Lilac rather than Ultra Violet Purple. “It’s much more contemporary, it’s much more current,” says Kimberly in her Swoon Worthy blog.

Meanwhile, Good Housekeeping even spotted the Queen wearing Pantone’s Colour of 2018 at yesterday’s commissioning ceremony of the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier in Portsmouth.

Colour Trends

Every year, the researchers at Pantone look for new colour influences and trends around the world. The colour they finally select then frequently appears in many design focused industries, including advertising, fashion and, of course, home furnishings.

Just in case you were wondering, Greenery was Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017.
